2018 Best 5 Compact Utility Vehicles!

2018 Best 5 Compact Utility Vehicles for everyday use, Sun, Snow, Surf, Shopping!

March 19, 2018 by Car Leasing Concierge.

Not long ago, utility vehicles were commonly associated with high gas expenses and environmental concerns. However, as gas prices climbed, the Goliath's (RIP, Hummer) were outpaced by the Davids, the small, fuel-efficient car segments.

Now, consumers are shifting their preferences again, this time toward a cross between the Davids and Goliath's, Compact Utility Vehicles (CUV's). This rising segment marries the practicality of passenger cars with the utility of SUV's resulting in a top choice for many car buyers. CUV's are perfect for everyday commutes during the week and weekend adventures for small families. Although these vehicles are compact, they ride higher than sedans, making them easy to get in and out of and especially easy to lift kids out of car seats. With spacious cargo capacity, these utility vehicles tend to hold more than traditional sedans. Read on to learn more about the top 5 searched CUV's for 2018.

UnTrue-Car Websites or Car Telemarketers? Sell Your Information For A Profit!

  • Today it’s great to be able to have all these new car Apps and Websites available  when you're in the market to buy or lease a new vehicle. But what most consumers don’t know is that 95% of these websites are linked to work in with car dealers. They all come across as your free friendly information center that supposedly helps you get the best deal possible when shopping for a new car.
  • Unknowingly, the customer is completely unaware of what's about to come their way. Let me break it down so you can understand how this magic show full of illusions works, and how you end up paying for that so-called "Free" service.
  • Once they have your information they send it to every dealership in your area hoping to get a sale. Before you know it, you’ll be bombarded with so many emails and phone calls you’ll think you have your very own fan club in the worst possible way. In return, 95% of these sites get a commission back from the selling dealer.
  • Car Dealerships sign up and pay these sites to get your information, then on top of that they get paid an additional commission, usually around $500 if they finalize the sale. So in actuality-- and I really want you to think about this-- you’re paying a site to take your information for what you thought was a free service and give it to car dealerships that then pay them a commission. How do you think these sites stay in business?
  • I know this for a FACT. I used to work for one of the largest dealer franchises in the Greater New York Tri-state area as a Fleet Director. At the beginning of each month these sites would ask us for the new price sheets with their commissions already packed into the price.
  • How many times a day do you see on the internet-- especially FaceBook-- asking you to enter your email, phone and zip code?
fake email address.png
  • Almost all dealerships have an Internet Department that signs up for these referral services. Believe me, you’ll end up with so many calls and emails, you’ll almost have to take on a new identity just to get rid of them! When a deal is complete the car dealer pays the vendor the fee they signed up with to get the information you entered.

Car Sites That Get Paid by Auto Dealers for Your Information!

  • CarMax
  • Edmunds

  • Kelly Blue Book

  • Cars Direct

  • Un-True Car

  • Cars.com

  • Auto-Trader

  • Cars Direct

  • The list goes on and on...

  • It’s quite funny, actually, watching these sites and Apps come up with new ways to try and lure people into believing all you have to do is order here and take this number to the car dealership. You're thinking, "Oh, wow that was easy!" Or even better, they give you a buyer’s certificate to show when you arrive at the dealership. That certificate you go in waving around is like a red flag to a bull. The only difference is they charge you in a different way.

Nice to meet you sucker!

  • The numbers they give you are about as useful as a one legged man in an ass kicking competition. They can only give you a working number, then you're on your own! Some companies now go as far as quoting exact payments.
Nice to meet you Sucker, I mean, "Sir."

Nice to meet you Sucker, I mean, "Sir."

Fact number 2

  • No one can quote you an exact payment without you filling out a credit application and  submitting it to the bank for an approval just like the dealerships. So be careful who you give out your information to with these new online apps.
  • Car dealerships won’t be going away anytime in the near future because sooner or later you’ll have to go into the dealership for a test drive. Just keep this in mind-- all these new Apps are coming out telling you that you’re approved and your payment is only going to be X amount, is just another way to lure you into a dealership.
  • We receive a ton of emails and calls from clients telling us how misleading these websites are once they arrive at the dealership. For peace of mind, before you decide to sign elsewhere, you can get your pricing checked by us at Car Leasing Concierge. We'll help break it down for you with total transparency. This way you'll rest easy knowing you're getting the best pricing and service for your hard earned dollars.

Remember: the last place you want to end up on is the corner of Sucker Street and Buyer's Remorse Blvd.!

Flood Damaged Cars - How Deep Do Car Insurance Companies Go?

Car Leasing Concierge opens the floodgates about Car Insurance Coverage on Flood-Damaged Cars!

car flood 2017 001.jpg

Many car insurance companies have been flooded with calls and emails after Hurricane Harvey and Irma that left many customers asking, is my car covered for flood damage? and how deep do insurance companies go to declare it a total loss?

  • State laws and your insurance company's guidelines dictate how a vehicle is determined to be a total loss. You must have comprehensive insurance coverage for your car to be repaired or replaced after flood damage. You will owe your chosen deductible.

In general, a car is determined to be a total loss when:

  • It's so severely damaged it cannot be safely repaired.
  • It costs more than the worth of the vehicle to repair it.
  • Or, if the amount of damage or cost of repairing the vehicle is too much, according to state regulations or the insurer's guidelines for a total loss.
  • Typically, cars are "totaled" when the cost of repairs to fix the vehicle is higher than the vehicle's actual cash value (ACV). However, in some cases, it's not practical to fix a car, even if the cost to do so is less than the ACV. In that case, insurance company guidelines and state laws come into play when determining whether the car is totaled or not.
  • Insurance companies calculate the “total loss ratio” or “damage ratio” (cost of repairs divided by the actual cash value) when determining whether a car is totaled. This ratio is then compared to limits either set by the company itself or by state law.
flood car 001.jpg
  • Some states dictate how high this damage ratio needs to be to declare a car totaled. This is referred to as the Total Loss Threshold (TLT). To total a car, the total loss ratio must exceed the established TLT percentage. If the TLT is not dictated by the state, your insurance company will generally use another formula, known as the Total Loss Formula (TLF) which is: Cost of Repair + Salvage Value > Actual Cash Value. If the sum of the repair cost and the salvage value is greater than the ACV, the car can be declared a total loss.
  • A damaged 2007 Toyota Corolla with 105,000 miles in good condition with an approximate value of $5,000. Total repair costs are $3,600, for a damage ratio of 72 percent. This car would be considered a total loss in Indiana, where the TLT is 70 percent, but not in Oregon where the TLT is 80 percent. In California, the TLF would be used and, if the salvage were worth $1,000, the car would not be totaled ($3,600 + $1,000 < $5,000).
  • These states use the TFL formula and rely on licensed appraisers during the process: California, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, and Washington.

These states have the following TLT threshold mandated by law:

  • Alabama 75%
  • Arkansas 70%
  • Colorado 100%
  • Florida 80%
  • Indiana 70%
  • Iowa 50%
  • Kansas 75%
  • Kentucky 75%
  • Louisiana 75%
  • Maryland 75%
  • Michigan 75%
  • Minnesota 70%
  • Missouri 80%
  • Nebraska 75%
  • Nevada 65%
  • New Hampshire 75%
  • New York 75%
  • North Carolina 75%
  • North Dakota 75%
  • Oklahoma 60%
  • Oregon 80%
  • South Carolina 75%
  • Tennessee 75%
  • Texas 100%
  • Virginia 75%
  • West Virginia 75%
  • Wisconsin 70%
  • Wyoming 75%

Your car insurance company can have its own internal guidelines that "total" a car, and that may be at a lower threshold than your state's TLT. However, an insurer can't have its own threshold set for a higher amount than the state. "For instance, in Florida, the state TLT is 80 percent, but if your insurer's own guidelines say to total a car at 75 percent, they can do that," but the insurer can't have a TLT at, say, 85 percent because that would be against the law."

Does car insurance cover flood damage?

flooded car.jpg
  • In some cases, your car insurance may pay for damages when your car sustains water damage and isn't totaled. Here's how the different types of car insurance coverage come into play if you're caught in a flood:
  • Comprehensive insurance -- If your vehicle sustains water or flood damage, you can file a claim under your comprehensive insurance coverage, which covers any type of damage to your car up to its actual cash value that's caused by natural disasters instead of accidents.
  • Collision coverage -- Collision comes into play if you hydroplane and flip your car or hit another car or a tree. Your claim will pay to repair your car or will pay the actual cash value of the car. You do still have to pay the deductible whether the accident was your fault, someone else's or caused by the storm.
flood car 002.jpg
  • Gap insurance -- This type of insurance comes into play if your car is totaled and you owe more money on your car than it's worth -- gap insurance will pay the difference. "For instance, if you owe $15,000 on your car loan but your car is only worth $12,000, gap insurance will reimburse your lender for the extra $3,000.  You can get gap insurance from your car insurance company or from your car financing company, but it's usually more expensive from your lender.
  • Rental car reimbursement-- Depending on your situation, rental reimbursement coverage is a wise choice or a waste. If you have a second car or a way to get where you need to go without your car, you don't need rental coverage, she says. But if you'd be left stranded for weeks while your car is being repaired, it may pay to have it. "Rental reimbursement coverage is optional and pays you a certain amount of money per day or per week for a rental car to drive while your car is being repaired.

Car Leasing Concierge. Unveiling Mercedes AMG Project ONE. Supercar

Car Leasing Concierge. The new Mercedes AMG Project ONE supercar.

In a predictably dramatic fashion, Mercedes-AMG has released its long-awaited F1-derived hypercar at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Lewis Hamilton was at the wheel of the AMG Project One, coaxing the hybrid hypercar out onto the stage to much applause.

Although the teaser silhouettes of the car gave a hint towards an LMP-style front end, it turns out that the Project One is in fact more akin to a more generic hypercar than once thought. The front profile of the car has something of the Noble M600 about it and the lower vents scream Ferrari 360.

The cockpit is conventionally placed instead of the Le Mans car styling that was once presumed. The presumption was that the AMG would have extremely short overhangs (much like the Porsche 919 Hybrid) but instead its proportions resemble (if anything) a Porsche 918 Spyder.

mercedes amg 1002.jpg

The looks may seem a little underwhelming but the stated performance certainly isn't. The combination of the 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 derived from the Mercedes Petronas Formula 1 car with four electric motors amounts to a total power output of over 1000hp. That power then gets the car from 0-200kph (124mph) in under 6 seconds and will see it reach over 350kph (218mph).

The engine has been developed and manufactured in AMG's plant in Brackley, UK and the electrical motors and batteries on board give the car a 25km in all-electric mode. The power plant has been stated to achieve 40% thermal efficiency in comparison to 33% often achieved by standard internal combustion engines.

mercedes AGM1 003.jpg

To further the surge towards efficiency, two of the four electric motors are found on the front axle, both of which can be used to recuperate 80% of braking energy to be recycled and stored in the car's battery packs.

Mercedes-Benz have produced some fairly outlandish cars in the past like the McLaren-Mercedes SLR and the CLK GTR, but the Project One will be a tectonic shift in the performance car landscape. Although the Aston Martin Valkyrie looks to be a bit more F1-orientated in terms of looks, the performance claims from AMG mean that the Project One can truly have the tag as 'an F1 car for the road'.

project one interior.jpg

What do you think of the AMG Project One's design? Has it lived up to your expectations? And if not, does the claimed performance make up for it? Comment with your thoughts below!

When you should buy your leased car!

CHEVY'S.jpg

In this April 26 photo, cars are lined up in the lot of a Chevrolet dealership in Richmond, Va. The buyout option at the end of a car lease can be an attractive opportunity or a tool for damage control. (AP Photo/Steve Helber)

  • Philip Reed NerdWallet

Aug 27, 2017

  • The buyout option at the end of a car lease can be an attractive opportunity or a tool for damage control.
  • The buyout price is set by the leasing company at the beginning of your contract. If you're anticipating extra fees and penalties, buying the car can cut your losses. Or, if market conditions have changed since you signed the lease and you've lightly driven the car, you could turn the hidden value in your vehicle into real savings.
  • Now that you know the numbers, here are the times when you might want to stay with old faithful.

Mileage

  • Most lease contracts are for three years and 36,000 miles. If you're over, you'll owe money; if you're under, you could leave money on the table.
  • "Why pay two or three grand in mileage penalties and have nothing to show for it?" says Matt Jones, a senior consumer advice editor at Edmunds. "Not only that but buying the car will save you the disposition fee," the charge to prepare the car for resale, which is usually $350 to $500.
  • But also check your contract for purchase option fees (typically about $350), charged by some leasing companies, and factor that into your decision.
  • Conversely, returning a car you drove only 10,000 miles when you paid for 36,000 miles is like handing the dealer a big check. Instead, buy the car and use the value you've paid for, Jones says. Or you can get a no-haggle appraisal at CarMax (or at a dealer, although this could involve some haggling). If the numbers break in your favor, since the under-mileage car is worth more than the buyout price, the agency will buy your lease and give you a check for the difference.

Wear and tear

  • If your car has a collection of indiscretions — scrapes, dings or tears in the upholstery — you could be looking at penalties for excess wear and tear. But if you buy the car, you won't be charged for the damage or the disposition fee, and you can fix the bumps and bruises when, and if, you want, says Paul Maloney, owner of Car Leasing Concierge. www.carleasingconcierge.com

Price

  • Buying your leased car saves the leasing company shipping and auction fees. That's why, in some cases, they'll call and offer you a lower buyout price than what's in the contract. But Maloney says it often isn't a good deal since they'll likely offer the retail price, when you should aim to buy it for wholesale.
  • To negotiate a reduced buyout price, you'll need to talk to a lease-end manager at the leasing company who has the power to approve lower prices. Banks writing leases may be more likely to negotiate than automakers' finance companies.
  • "It's really just a case-by-case basis," Jones says. He says leased electric vehicles often have reduced buyout prices because of low resale values.

'Pass-through'

  • If you buy the car then sell it to a friend, you'll have to pay sales tax. Instead, see if the finance manager at a local dealership will do a "lease pass-through," says Scot Hall, executive vice president of operations for Swapalease, which matches leaseholders with car shoppers looking to take over a lease.
  • Basically, the dealer buys the car from you and immediately sells it to your friend. You aren't charged sales tax and the dealer makes a few hundred dollars for moving paper. But be aware: Your warm body without a car in a car dealership means that you're probably in for a sales pitch.

You like the car

  • Maybe, you think, it's time to stop being a serial leaser, jumping from one leased car to another, always having a monthly car payment. If you like your car, compare the buyout price to the retail price on Edmunds and Kelley Blue Book. If it's a fair deal, skip the dealership and send the lease company a check.

  • Keep in mind, however, that you won't be protected by the bumper-to-bumper warranty which is typically for three years and 36,000 miles. But the powertrain warranty, covering major parts like the engine, transmission and suspension, might still be in effect.

2017's Hottest Car Buying Trend!

2017's Hottest Car Buying Trend has a step-by-step, quick and easy process for new car buyers in the market to buy or lease any new Car, Truck, Van or SUV. This valuable buyers guide saves shoppers Time, Money and unnecessary Stress.

Why is buying a car like learning a foreign language?

  • A national auto pollster recently surveyed 10,000 people in the U.S. about buying or leasing new cars, and the results show most consumers aren’t exactly fans of the standard car dealership experience. In fact, three-quarters said if given the opportunity, they would consider making their entire car-buying process online-- including financing, price negotiation, back office paperwork and home delivery.

Don't Worry, Drive Happy!

  • For many, purchasing a car at a dealership is too much of a confusing high-pressure process. It’s easy to see how it’s preferable to haggle over prices and options and review the fine print at one’s leisure in front of a screen rather than surrounded by salespeople and their “let me talk to the manager” games.
  • After all, a classic negotiation tactic is walking away from the deal on the table, and walking away from an online offer is as simple as ignoring an email.
  • For another indication of the degree to which consumers don’t like the traditional car-buying experience, check out a recent survey conducted by another national auto ranking pollster.
  • Of 4,002 consumers polled, only 17 said they like the current car buying process just as it is. The rest said they “want significant changes, particularly in the test drive, deal structuring, financing paperwork and service phases.” Many said they’d like to see the nitty-gritty of deals conducted online rather than in person.

Is your wallet getting taken for a test drive?

  • For instance, consumers indicate that they would like to see a big change in the way they go about negotiating the deal structure. Of those who liked the idea of online deal building, over half, 65%, want the ability to start the negotiation on their own terms—preferably online—and 35% would like to remain anonymous until they lock in the deal structure.
  • Nearly three-fourths of consumers, 72%, want to complete the credit application and financing paperwork online. The key factors driving this desire are to save time at the dealership (reported by 72% of those who favor online paperwork) and to have less pressure while filling out paperwork (reported by 71% of those who favor online paperwork).
  • Let’s not forget that one of the supposed purposes of car dealerships is to provide a place for consumers to kick the tires, test-drive vehicles, and (hopefully) get good insights and advice from employees.

Nonetheless, there’s considerable pressure to change the often-maddening experience—to make it quicker, more transparent, less stressful, and less complicated—and become more open to online purchases.

Do car dealerships really have the best deals?

If you’ve ever dreaded going to the car dealership, you’re not alone. That’s why services exist that help people buy cars without ever setting foot on a lot.

Once you decide on a car model, car-buying services use certified representatives to do all the searching and haggling for you. Online car services enable you to buy from your living room couch.

People hire representation when they’re not an expert in that field … and car buying today is complex. You negotiate price, interest rates or lease rates, the bank fees, and once you get all that done, you’re not finished.

A lot of people are just not prepared to effectively negotiate a car deal for themselves. If you want an expert’s help with finding, negotiating and purchasing a new or used car — or you want someone to do those things for you entirely — consider one of the following.

Car Concierges:

What they do:

Auto concierges learn about a shopper’s vehicle needs and preferences than do the legwork. This is where business owners and corporations go to buy or lease their vehicles, as it far supersedes anything a dealership will offer you. Lastly, Concierges will even have the car delivered to your home or office so you can sign the sales contract.

Car-buying concierge is a highly specialized service that only a few companies currently offer.

Payment:

Concierges typically charge a small upfront flat fee or sometimes a percentage of the amount they save you on the vehicle purchase. This fee depends on the car they’re tasked with finding, since they normally deal in mass volume. Either way, the price will nearly always be cheaper than going to a car dealership.

What to know:

  • These professionals know what they’re doing, most are former automotive fleet directors or inventory managers that have the ability and leverage to bypass car dealerships completely.
  • They have access to factory to dealer incentives, buy rates and dealer costs on extended warranty contracts etc, that’s normally not offered to the public
  • Concierges can purchase your new car, so you never have to visit a dealership.

  • No dealer fees or marked up rates.

  • No waiting, same day delivery or within 24 hrs

  • Transparent and professional service. No games.

Club car-buying programs:

What they do: Companies such as American Express, Costco, and AAA have their own auto-buying programs. Some credit unions, such as Navy Federal, also offer them.

Members input their ideal car model and features online, then the company’s representatives search for a match within their certified dealership network.

These approved dealerships offer low, prearranged pricing in exchange for the company’s referrals. Once your representative has found an option, he or she will arrange for you to visit the dealership.

You can take a test drive and sign a contract if you think it’s the right car for you.

Payment:

There might be a small fee for this service, but it’s often free with membership.

What to know:

  • Your car-buying professional might not find the exact model or color you wanted in the dealership network. You’re more likely to find the car you prefer with these services if you’re looking for a widely available model.

  • Many of these representatives can offer advice about which cars are best in class or suggest vehicles you might not have considered.

  • You’ll still be offered an extended warranty and other additional products by the dealership.

  • You still have to go to the car dealership to sign and there’s no guarantee you won’t be waiting. But at least the price of the car is locked in.

  • Bottom line is they can’t get it cheaper than a car concierge that delivers to you

Car Brokers:

What they do:

  • Brokers are often former car salespeople, well-versed in the tactics of dealerships. They can operate individually or as part of a large company with multiple agents.
  • You can hire a broker to search car lots, haggle and buy your ideal car for the best price. You can even hire one to negotiate on your behalf for a car you’ve already found.

Payment:

  • Some brokers charge a small fee or none at all, but they receive an undisclosed commission from the dealership.

  • Buyers should be aware this raises the possibility that some brokers could be incentivized to settle for a higher price or only visit dealerships with which he or she has a good relationship like Truecar or Cars.com.

  • Be careful, these companies get paid to sell your information to the car dealerships and are referred to in the industry as glorified car brokers.

What to know:

  • Car Concierges provide the best overall choice if you don't like going to car dealers
  • Car-buying services are a good service but still send you to the car dealership
  • Find trusted car brokers through online review sites, such as Yelp, or recommendations from friends.

  • Most brokers send you to the dealership to pick up your car or charge a fee to have it delivered.

Are they right for you?

  • Visiting the dealership still has some advantages. It makes it easier to arrange test drives and compare models, and dealerships sometimes have the lowest interest rates for lease deals.
  • We hear often from consumers who negotiated prices for hours with car salespeople. They wasted their time. The only leverage you have with car dealers is the possibility that you’ll walk out and buy from another dealer, or not buy anything at all.
  • We hear from other consumers who used websites that promise to provide information to help them obtain the best price, or in some cases, a (supposedly) low price quote from a car dealer.
  • Some of these websites mean well, they try to arm shoppers with price data they can use to negotiate better-than-average deals. But many just provide referrals to participating—really, paying—dealerships.
  • Even when these sites seem to provide low prices, they often omit important details like hefty document fees, extra fees to locate specific cars, or costly mandatory options.
  • Still, although they might have fees or membership dues, auto-buying programs can save car shoppers a lot of time, stress and potentially thousands of dollars. If you don’t have the time to search the market for the right car — or you simply don’t want to — it can be a relief to have an expert do the heavy lifting.

The bottom line:

"There aren’t too many things out there anymore that you can’t buy in an online way, and it’s really automotive that’s lagging pretty much every other industry out there until now."

  • Car Leasing Concierge is changing the way people buy or lease a new car, in fact you don't even have to step foot inside a dealership. It’s a quick and easy process that many businesses and corporations use.
  • What many people don't know is that the average car shopper can also use their services to buy or lease their own personal vehicles.  This allows them to bypass car dealerships entirely, saving them valuable time, money and unnecessary stress

  • Created by former auto fleet directors who've managed some of the Tri-state's largest and most prestigious automotive dealerships for over 25 years, their Direct Fleet Network system has the ability and leverage to deal directly with the manufacturer.
  • This allows them to offer you below dealer pricing on most makes and models normally inaccessible to the public. What that means is this is the cheapest way  you can possibly buy or lease a new car, truck or SUV-- regardless of where you got your price from.
  • If you have a new vehicle in mind, they'll be be more than happy to check your deal for a better one. In most cases after a quick analysis is complete, clients end up saving hundreds to thousands of dollars more they weren't even aware of.

  • For many, purchasing a car at a dealership is too much of a confusing high-pressure process.

  • It’s easy to see how it’s preferable to haggle over prices and options and review the fine print at one’s leisure in front of a screen rather than surrounded by salespeople and their “let me talk to the manager” games.

  • Once you decide on a car model, car-buying services use certified representatives to do all the searching and haggling for you. And online car shops enable you to buy from your living room couch.

  • People hire representation when they’re not an expert in that field … and car buying today is complex. You negotiate price, interest rates or lease rates, the bank fees, and once you get all that done, you’re not finished.

A lot of people are just not prepared to effectively negotiate a car deal for themselves. If you want an expert’s help with finding, negotiating and purchasing a new or used car — or you want someone to do those things for you entirely — consider the following.

Car Concierge:

What they do:

  • Auto concierges learn about a shopper’s vehicle needs and preferences than do the legwork.

  • This is where business owners and corporations go to buy or lease their vehicles, as it far supersedes anything a dealership will offer you.

  • Lastly, Concierges will even have the car delivered to your home or office so you can sign the sales contract.
